Producing quality music is Mr Vegas' main drive in life, and this focus has landed him at the number one spot on all the local charts this week with his single Last Night (Constant Spring), re-igniting the hit power he has enjoyed in the past with producers Steely and Clevie.
Mr Vegas' hot new track Last Night (Constant Spring) is on top this week, and a new Jay Wills-produced video for the song is set to drop soon.
Last Night is featured on Steely and Clevie's Sleepy Dog rhythm and is the second number one song from that rhythm project. The previous chart-topper was Assassin's As a Man. "I worked with Steely on the song Big Things a Gwaan in the late 1990's.
Then we worked on Hot Gal Today, which also hit number one. Steely knows the hits. When you record a song for him, you feel like you buss," said Vegas in an interview recently. This is Vegas' first number one song in Jamaica in five years. In the year 2000 he topped the charts just before Reggae Sumfest with Girls Time. Vegas' hit list is huge.
Mr Vegas whose real name is Clifford Smith, started out singing in the late 1980s. He recorded songs like Killing Me Softly with Don Yute before recording a string of songs for the Pick Out label. He eventually left that production entity out of frustration and set up a cooking shop in Patrick City.
But the music bug continue to bite, and Vegas followed his intuition and recorded the 1997 Jeremy Harding-produced hit Hands Inna Di Air (Nike Air) which was featured on the wildly popular Playground rhythm.
Since then he has racked up numerous accolades. Apart from copping the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Award in 1999 for Best Reggae Artiste, Vegas has struck it big on the Billboard charts three times, first with Hot Gal Today featuring Sean Paul, and then with Heads High and last year with Pull Up.
On the local charts he has racked up a number of hits with She's a Ho, Go Up, Juicy, Rise, Yuh Sure, Sucky Ducky, Jacket and Sweet Pineapple among others. Said Vegas, "I have reached a stage right now, where I am doing this for the love of it. Having a number one song is good, but the greatest pleasure is to have a hit out there that the people can identify with."
Vegas' debut album Heads High sold more than 100,000 without the support of a major record company.
Last year US-based Delicious Vinyl released the album Pull Up in Europe. Vegas added that the album is yet to be released in the US or in the Caribbean. "Right now I am not pressuring an album. I am just recording and focusing on the base market which is Jamaica," Vegas pointed out.
Vegas recently reunited with one-time manager Byron Murray of In the Streetz. The two have been working together ever since Vegas emerged onto the scene in the late 1990s. "Murray is doing his thing, and we have a good working relationship. The work speaks for itself," Vegas added.
Vegas' latest single is Taxi Fare, which features Mr Lex aka Lexxus. The song was produced by Richard 'Shams' Browne and a video was shot recently by director Jay Will.
"It's a really funny video. Is dem type a song deh fi di girls," Vegas reassured. Fans can also look out for another new recording, More Love on the Q45 label which is also receiving a steady run at radio.
