Marie of Zap Mama
Greetings to all,
Had the opportunity to watch a rehearsal at the Hollywood Bowl, with Seal, Zap Mama featuring special
guest Michael Franit.
I went to the bowl to find out about the show and managed to get tickets. As I was walking away from the ticket booth I could hear a rehearsal going on.
Walking toward the music I ask if I could watch, the
answer was sure watch everything. I found a nice spot in the shade. It was a very sunny day and quite warm. A few more people sat in the same area, I ask
who was on at the time. One lady replied, that's the guy
as Seal walked on stage and began to go through the
performance he would do later that night.
I watched as he tested the different areas of the stage
and walked out into the audience area on a ledge that
surrounded the box seats next to the stage. Going through all the songs at times he would look our way
and sing to us, what an experience.
Later Zap Mama and Michael Franti, her band and DJ Scratch walked onto the stage, each greeting Seal.
Michael was with a young boy, probably his son. For
the love shown between them was surly a father son type of love. Michael holding him in his arms quite often.
The stage was a turning stage. When Seal finished
the stage turned and Zap Mama's equipment was already sat up. Marie had each of the female vocalist
to warm up their voices, she would call on them one
at a time. Once they had finished Marie would say thank you and move to the next vocalist.
Michael was standing on stage as the vocalist rehearsed. When Marie called on him he did a free style
type of rap adding things about the show and the time they had on stage.
Sitting there until Zap Mama finished, the stage turned
again and there were two other acts to come on. Van
Hunt and De La Soul.
At that time I decided to leave to get ready for the show. When I returned that area was blocked off and
the Ticket takers were standing in place.
I watched Van Hunt, wanted to see what his music was all about. All and all he gave a good performance.
His time was very short. At the end he said he had 1
minute and a half left and he wanted to do one more song, and if the stage started to turn you would know
why. But yes he was able to finish. Van was scheduled
to sign autographs as Marie did. A man at the Tower Records booth said Van forgot to mention it during his performance and did'nt want to come out with no one
there. He said they would be sending items out to the
people that came to the booth and ask about Van.
I did get to meet Marie and talk with her for a few minutes and I took photos at the signing.
