Buju Banton at Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest Fellow Rastafarian, Buju Banton - the show closer - gave a forthright performance and delivered Outta Road (Me Too Bad) and Hey Bwoy, Hey Bwoy. The 'gargamel' continued with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang set on the infamous Punnany riddim followed by a brief sample of Til' Shiloh (Untold Story). Dressed in all white, he explored the disparity between rich and poor with a rendition of Destiny followed by Magic City from the album of the same name. Article: Buju Banton and friends lens new video Basil Walters, Observer staff reporter Friday, August 04, 2006 IT was a festive mood yesterday afternoon at Buju Banton's Carlysle Avenue recording complex where a fair-sized gathering of entertainers participated in a day-long video shoot for the scorching new 100-Watt Riddim. The medley clip features some of the hottest acts on the scene, including Assassin, Mr Vegas, Mr Lexx, New Kidz, Ghost & East Coast, Mitch (formerly of ARP)and of course Buju Banton. "We are shooting today a video for the 100-Watt Riddim, which is one of our rhythms that was built here in the Gargamel camp," explained the New York-based vice-president and general manager of Gargamel Music (Buju's record label), Tracii McGregor who is also director of the video along with Troy Antonia (of Buju's Magic City fame) and photographed by Salvador Bolivar, of Luciano's Give Praise fame. Buju Banton is the executive director. "We actually have 20 different artistes on the riddim," gushed McGregor, "and we plucked about seven for the video I called the 'Magnificent Seven'. A lot of hot names on the 100-Watt Riddim, but for the video though, we'll be featuring of course Buju Banton's Nothing, Assassin's Unleashed, Mr Vegas' Bruk Out, Mr Lexx's Dem Nuh Build Nuh Gun, Ghost & East Coast's It's All Over, Mitch's Sound Of A Gun and New Kidz's Man A Gallis." The stellar and incredibly diverse group of artistes converged on the Carlyle Avenue premises, was watched by a beaming Benjamin Myrie (Buju's father) affectionately called Bunny. "I'm very excited about it, y'know," the elder Myrie told the Observer. It was Gargamel Music Inc's official launch of the first in the label's Excalibur Sound riddim album series. Gargamel Music will release the complete Excalibur Sound Volume One:100-Watt Riddim project in October. The album also features contributions from Sizzla, Spragga Benz, Bling Dawg and many more of Jamaica's finest homegrown talents. Explaining the concept of the video, Tracii McGregor added, "The concept of the video really is a look behind the gate. Behind the gate of Gargamel, showing people what goes on here on a day-to-day basis. A very, very spiritual place, a highly creative space, a lot of camaraderie." Then switching the focus of the conversation to Buju's activities over the past couple of months, she said, "It's been an incredibly exciting time for Buju Banton. Buju started out this summer at the end of May, he did a bunch of shows in the US, he did a huge show at UCLA. It was actually the 20th anniversary of their jazz/reggae festival which Buju headlined. He also performed at that big concert in Florida. Then in June he took off to Europe where he did a 25-city tour. He had soldout shows in Denmark, soldout shows in England despite the one show that everyone likes to harp on that was shut down in Brighton which was also soldout. Italy was incredible." "I was going back over through some of the reviews, and the writer from Denmark wrote about the show there and said that it was the best show in Denmark since the 1978 show with Bob Marley and the Wailers. So that is the level that Buju was performing at. Buju did the shows and came back just a week ago and did Sumfest and this weekend he is doing Sunsplash. From here, he goes to Japan for two weeks and right after Japan he embarks on a 50-city US tour. The first 10 days is part of the One Love Tour package which include Gregory Isaacs, Capleton, CoCo T. And then the album release date of Too Bad, which is September 12, Buju kicks off his own tour in the States, which will be another 40 cities." And when the Observer caught up with the man of the moment, a jovial Buju spoke about the forthcoming album. "Well, Gargamel has been given the opportunity to uplift its head according to musical righteousness to distribute our records through Tommy Boy which is a major record distribution company located in North America. And we intend to make good use of this, to exploit it to the fullest where reggae music is concerned, and make sure seh the culture is not watered down but there is an avenue where the true authentic sound of the island can be captured untouched." No hype, pop sheen, just 17 raw tracks that will undoubtedly take a 1990's certified reggae lover down memory lane. Why is it that an ostracized, slicktalking, Rastaman veteran deejay had to usher in a wicked dancehall collectable; something the games been missing since the turn of the century? The type of heart thumping music the new millennium generation inherited but sadly was unable to reproduce. No dutty wining or thunder clapping is necessary (maybe a lickle gangsta rocking) when vibin' to Too Bad (Gargamel), Buju Banton's vicious new independent project." --AllHipHop.Com FOR THE FULL ALLHIPHOP.COM REVIEW CLICK BELOW Buju Banton//AllHipHop.Com ReviewFor regular tour updates visit www.gargamelmusic.com or www.myspace.com/bujubanton Buju Banton. BUJU BANTON'S UNOFFICIAL SINGLE "DRIVER A" MASHING UP JAMAICAN RADIO, DANCEHALLS, CHARTS, CABS - Artist Confirmed To Headline Annual Guinness Sting Concert on Boxing Day - (Kingston, JA/New York/NY - 18, December 2006) Gargamel Music is pleasantly surprised to announce that the biggest tune in Jamaica right now is Buju Banton's "Driver A," an album cut available solely on his Grammy-nominated new project Too Bad. A classic reality-tune laced with precision on Sly & Robbie's vintage Taxi riddim, "Driver A" has not been released on 7" or officially worked as a single — yet has garnered so much play in the dancehall, on the radio and by every cabbie in Kingston, that it has skyrocketed to the top of the local charts in just a few weeks.
RETV's Reggae chart has "Driver A" sitting fit at #2 — this past week's greatest gainer in sales. The runaway hit is also the greatest gainer and "shot to watch" on Hype TV's Top 20 Reggae/Dancehall singles chart, gliding up two notches to #4. On Jamaica's Weekly Top 30 Hit List, "Driver A" leaped from #15 to its current place at #5 and it moved up 6 spots to #5 on Hitz 92's Top 20 Official Hitz From Yaad.
"Driver A" is the fifth single featured on Banton's stellar Too Bad album to blow up backayard this year. Additional chart-toppers include "Me & Oonu," "Til It Bend," Hey Boy" (aka "Talk To Me") and "Nothing." In order to meet the high demand, Gargamel Music has tapped Penthouse Distribution to help exclusively distribute Too Bad in Jamaica, just in time for the holiday rush. Stateside, 'Driver A" has already steered its way to #1 on Media Guide's Reggae Specialty chart, #4 on Dahved Levy's Caribbean Fever Top 10 on WBLS New York and is bubbling at #14 on New York's Top 30 Reggae Singles Chart. In addition to early support from core stations such as Waah Gwan, Irie Jam and Link Up, "Driver A" is receiving enthusiastic spins at New York's highly influential Hot 97, WEDR in Miami, WLLD in Tampa, WPHH and WZMX in Hartford-New Haven, and KBOO in Portland.
Over in the UK, "Driver A" is getting love on BBC 1Xtra, Choice FM and Kiss FM London.
Buju Banton is scheduled to headline the annual Guinness Sting concert on December 26th at the Jamworld Entertainment Complex in Portmore Jamaica. This hotly anticipated performance will be Banton's first on-island since the release of his critically acclaimed new album.
