TOK members part with manager
The members of boy band TOK are no longer being managed by Olu Burns. Burns had assumed management of the group after they severed ties with Richard 'Shams' Browne.
Backstage at the television show Rising Stars last Sunday night, group member Alex said the group decided to move on and handle its own affairs after things with Burns didn't work out the way that the group had intended.
"When it comes to business we had to make a few decisions. He is doing his thing in New York and we are doing our thing here in Jamaica. It's all about getting TOK to the forefront.
We have been basically managing ourselves for three years now."
Burns himself is a former recording artiste. The Chicago native is a former house music producer who scored a platinum-selling single in the early 1990s with French Kiss. He also released two albums with Epic Records under the moniker Lil Louis.
"The workload has gotten even harder for us now, but at the end of the day it is putting out some good work that people will remember you for. We are not going to let anyone or anything hold us back," Alex said.
TOK's former local chart-topper Footprints is riding the Billboard R&B Singles chart, and at last check it was already in the Top 40 portion of the chart. Alex says the group always knew that the song had the potential to cross over outside of Jamaica.
"We always believed in Footprints. It's a very powerful song. That song was written following the death of my brother in 2003 due to gun violence. We had to make our voices heard as far as the violence is concerned," Alex said.
TOK's latest album Unknown Language went gold in Japan (100,000 units) two and a half weeks after it was released. The group's next single set for international release is Hey Ladies from Donovan Bennett's Jonkanoo rhythm.
