Local groups want to prevent Jamaican artist from playing controversial songs July 5, 2007 - There is a grassroots effort in Chicago to eliminate hateful lyrics from music. Two community groups, Sankofa Way and the Coalition for Justice and Respect, organized protests to get Jamaican singing star Buju Banton to avoid performing a controversial song at the African-Caribbean fest in Chicago. The members say some of Banton's music is homophobic and spreads a violent message. They say the first step in erasing hateful lyrics is raising awareness. "Once people actually understand hate language, and see how it is used to incite violence in an already violent world, they move fast to put distance between them and the hate language," said Rev. Deborah Lake, Sankofa Way Spiritual Services, Inc. The groups plan a nationwide awareness campaign against other artists it thinks spreads hateful messages. abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=local&id=5453836
