Reggae star Matisyahu isn't losing his religion
Reggie diehards chant it at concerts, but most nonmusical peeps probably can't figure out what Matisyahu is.
Tick, tick. Time's up -- it's Matthew Paul Miller's stage name. Pronounced Mawtis-yahoo, it sounds mildly Japanese, but actually is the Hebrew version of Matthew. The 29-year-old Pennsylvania native is a superstar entertainer -- and Hasidic Jew.
Don't worry; the observant entertainer -- and new spokesman for Kenneth Cole -- is well aware of the problems his moniker creates.
''I've heard people call me some really funky stuff,'' said the artist Friday before sundown on the roof of the Riviera South Beach Hotel. ``Matsa-yahoo, Matachoochi. That's what happens when you have a hard name to pronounce.''
Miller was still on a high after rapping it out at the Delano's Florida Room the previous night.
''It was really personal and intimate,'' said Miller, whose latest album Light will be released in May. ``There's no stage so everyone is kind of hovering and hanging around.''
