Africa will once again be the main focus for the 2006 birthday celebrations for reggae's most venerated icon Bob Marley. For the second consecutive year, the celebrations will take the title of one of the maestro songs, 'Africa Unite'.
Like this year, when the legendary superstar 60th birthday was celebrated with a month long festivities in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, it will be another ostentatious affair on Sunday, February 5, 2006 in Accra, Ghana. Bob Marley was born on February 6.

Next year's celebrations will be staged at the International Trade Fair Centre in Accra. It was officially launched a month ago at the International Press Centre in that West African town.
Artistes confirmed so far for the event jointly promoted by the Bob Marley Foundation/Rita Marley Foundation in association with the Ghanaian Ministry of Tourism include the widow of the immortal entertainer Rita Marley along with the I-Three, the Marley Brothers, Culture, Morgan Heritage, Nigerian artiste, Two Face and Ghanaian superstar, Usibeasa who once toured with Bob Marley, Miss Bell, Rex Omar and VIP.
"The celebration will take place next year in Accra, being the more metropolitan area, the capital," coordinator, Dennis Wright told the Sunday Observer.
"And it's under the auspices of the Ghanaian Ministry of Tourism and the Bob Marley and the Rita Marley Foundations," he added. He was quick to point out however, that he would welcome more sponsorship given the magnitude of the event which is expected to attract a crowd of over 66,000 people.
"We're still trying to get some more sponsors to come on board," Wright who once worked as a music consultant to Tuff Gong admitted.
And already preparations have started for the 2007 celebrations for the 62nd birthday anniversary to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
"We're in the process of putting together the event for 2007 in South Africa which will be a very major event," disclosed Wright who will be travelling to the continent this week to meet with the offices of the South African president and High Commissioner on the matter. The launch of that leg of 'Africa Unite' will take place in September of next year in Johannesburg.
Bob Marley, Jamaica's most famous son, was born on February 6, 1945, and succumbed to cancer on May 11, 1981.
