Junior Kelly launches Tough Life Balford Henry, Observer writer Friday, October 28, 2005 Junior Kelly Junior Kelly certainly has the knack for putting the right label on things. Like when he questioned why love could be so nice, yet hurt so bad and the song became the anthem for safe sex. Now his sixth album tackles the issue of Tough Life, and since most Jamaicans agree that life could hardly be any tougher right now, it could well become the anthem for a generation refusing to cool. Despite the acid title, the new product includes some refreshingly pleasant love songs and some moving inspirational ones too. These include his most recent hit single, the addictive Receive, which was very warmly appreciated at the launch, and a great duet with Dennis Brown titled Hold the Faith. There is also a JC Lodge revival titled Love You Like That, on which Lodge sings her mega reggae hit, Someone Loves You Honey. Kelly's new CD, Tough Life, was launched at a function at Kabana Restaurant, Hope Road, Wednesday night which drew quite a large crowd of the faithful who insist on the superiority of the message over the rhythm. The album was recorded at five studios, Tuff Gong, Sky and Robbie, Anchor, Cell Block and Gumption and is Kelly's sixth with his last two offerings being Love So Nice and Smile. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Delano Franklyn(left) and Copeland Forbes at Junior Kelly's album launch on Wednesday. (Photo: Garfiels Robinson) Speaking with the Observer yesterday, Kelly said he was really pleased with the outcome of the project especially its over-riding philosophy and the message he wants to send to the people of Jamaica through the songs on Tough Life which took him approximately eight months to put together. "Tough Life is special for me. I was not born in a bed of roses or had a crown to be placed on my head. Instead, I grew up in one of the harsh ghettos of Kingston (off the Waltham Park Road) and it was really a very tough life for me. But I never gave up hope and this is the essential message, that there is always hope. To me Junior Kelly, the greatest failure in life is not to try," Kelly said. Commenting on the production of Tough Life, Kelly said he had no problems writing or coming up with the creative inputs but he was insistent on getting the right blend and flavour on the album. "It took eight months and most of the time the production team and myself were searching to get the right personnel in place so as to get the right mix. It is like a kitchen where you can have all the ingredients but the final product is not as tasty and right as you would want. So I spent the extra hours making sure that we had the right people to deliver the flavour and blend that were required," Kelly said. Guest speaker at the launch, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Delano Franklyn, paid tribute to Kelly's dedication to wholesome reggae music and his commitment to professionalism. Cooyah fashions marketing director, Gary Codner, also praised the artiste's development and his commitment to the best traditions of Jamaican pop music during a brief contribution. Cooyah, the main sponsor of the event, provided the back-up band with T-shirts and had Kelly decked out in their latest line of men's fashion which was on exhibition during the function. Veteran road manager and head of Comar Productions, Copeland Forbes spoke about Kelly's progress from his early years of Love So Nice when he joined the Luciano touring party. "When he first toured with us in 2001," said Forbes who has been Luciano's tour manager for several years after working with stars like Jimmy Cliff and Peter Tosh, "I was curious about how he would hold an audience for 30-45 minutes with just a single hit tune." Forbes said that Kelly surprised him on that first tour and immediately convinced him that he was destined to become a major reggae star. He then introduced the night's back-up band, which included Fire House Crew's George "Dusty" Miller, drums and Danny Bassie, bass, as well as Mitchum "Khan" Chin, guitar, Sheldon Bernard, keyboards, Stan Hope, bass and back-up singers Sherida, Althea and Nicky. Kelly took the stage at the close and proceeded through half an hour of delightful singing and energetic presentation which had the throng cheering him right through. MC was Denise Isis Miller. Guests included VP's marketing manager in Jamaica, Yolan Zanders and Jamaica Federation of Musicians"(JFM) president, Desmond Young. Taken from the Jamaican Observer. www.jamaican observer.com

Junior Kelly makes a masterpiece with “Prince of Roots” By:OIimattaTaal Junior Kelly has returned from a successful tour in Europe and finished his new album entitled Prince of Roots. "I tour pretty much every summer, going to new territories. Sometimes you present the music for the first time to people, the first time dem hear reggae, u make history," describes the artist of his recent experience.
Gracing fans around the world in Spain, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Austria, France, Poland, and other countries Junior Kelly expresses that even though he traveled to many areas, "There are many places yearning to greet Reggae's ambassadors. Countries like Indonesia, the Middle East, China, North and South Korea, Israel want to see us, I been doing drops for them. We'll be getting there soon."
The concept of Kelly's newest album "Prince of Roots" derives from looking at how the music has deteriorated and making it a masterpiece. "The quality and texture of the music is not the same. The hype is dampening the music, hindering it. So when we are creating, we try to get some new spice, different tracks that will bring out the highlights," Kelly explains.
The new album has different musical flavours like blue grass, punk rock and hard rock. "I like meddling with different music and coming up with different concoctions. It starts something that is vibrant, exotic, and unique. Making something that can’t be tainted, something to nourish and cherish," beams Kelly as he discusses “Prince of Roots."
His most recent album "Tough Life" granted him rave reviews through the popular single "Receive" and other hits. His recent duet "Missing You" with singer Barbee continues to remain in rotation as a favourite. Not one to stray far from his roots, Junior Kelly continues to show consistency with delivering quality music for over a decade.
