Third African Millennium 2007 The doom and gloom that precipitated Y2K in the west will not be repeated next year when Ethiopia ushers in a new millennium. Instead of the fear and caution of computer crashes, stalling airplanes, elevators, scientific technology etc, the North African nation is promoting a new renaissance. A number of festivals, tourism, economic growth, and development of infrastructure are being highlighted as features of next year’s arrival of their 2000 calendar year. Last week, the African millennium committee unveiled an itinerary to mark “a celebration of the New African Ethiopian Millennium”. In collaboration with the Committee for Ethiopian Literacy and Friends of Ethiopia worldwide, The Third African Millennium begins on September 12, 2007. Extensive explanation to media detailed that the original early Christian calendar called the “Year of Mercy”, bears some relation to the Julian calendar but is seven to eight years behind the Gregorian calendar. According to Ethiopian spokespersons, during the initial week of the celebration, the Enkutatash Festival will usher in the New Year with plenty of festivities. September 24 marks the beginning of the Maskal Festival with celebrations commemorating the finding of the True Cross. A third series of activities continues January 16 to 25, 2008 when the Timqat Festival incorporates baptism to the important milestone. The final millennium festivity kicks off April 5, 2008 with two weeks of Easter observation of the Fasika Festival. Educators, theology, history, and Biblical students, history buffs, and the uninitiated are encouraged to visit Ethiopia during the millennium celebration next year. Dr. Ephraim Isaac, director of Institute of Semitic Studies said, “Ethiopia has plenty to offer everyone throughout the world.” From coffee, wheat, the Arc of the Covenant, and geological revelation that Lucy, the first female, skeletal bones of humans dated 3.2 million years ago was founded in Ethiopia. “Much is made of Egypt’s Nile, but the Nile starts in Ethiopia and runs to Egypt,” a member of the cleric stated. Nadine Sutherland wows Miami Nadine Sutherland breezed through New York after totally wowing crowds in Miami, Florida. Southerners attending the outing said the veteran performer stole the show from Tanya Stephens and proved her status by commanding a performance that outranked every other artiste. “Nadine made everybody else look like dem a play dolly house,” Florida-based, photographer Dreamy Riley said. He said her repertoire, style, rapport and talent overshadowed names. According to Riley, he and other patrons left the venue after seeing Sutherland and trying to connect with others billed on the date. “Everyone seemed surprised by my performance,” Sutherland said. “I don’t know that I am doing anything differently. I am giving as much as I always give. Maybe I must seem more confident…that may be it.” Statesiders have always shown love to the singer who started as a child protégé to now combine her talent advising potential stars on the Rising Star TV show. There is so much talent in Jamaica,” the spiritually centered singer explained. After deciding finalists and winners on the popular local show, Sutherland feels she is enhancing the prospects of otherwise hopeless talents. “The show has really benefited a lot of individuals. Contestants are known all across the island and get bookings on major shows,” Sutherland said.
Original dreamgirl absent Back in 1981, December 20 to be exact, when “Dreamgirls” the musical, opened at the Imperial theatre on Broadway, actresses Jennifer Holiday, Loretta Devine, and Sheryl Lee Ralph were the talk of the town. They were the leaders of the pack…the dreamgirls. The play garnered 13 Tony nominations to claim theatre’s highest acclaim. Holiday’s delivery and powerhouse voice was the main topic of conversations on Broadway. That now classic showstopper and sure-bet Apollo Theatre winner “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” still invokes a body tingle that few can replicate. American Idol’s Jennifer Hudson measured nicely to pay tribute to Holiday’s incomparable talent in the film version. She is awesome in rendering the song. After 25 years, Holiday’s role as Effie White, the star attraction with a role Hudson has comfortably inherited, is again the attention-getter. Although Hinton Battle and Loretta Devine are the only originals in this screen version, the film still manages to tell an endurable tale loosely based on the biggest selling girl-group, The Supremes, Motown Records, Berry Gordy and the music industry of the 1960’s. Unfortunately our, own Jamerican, dreamgirl Sheryl Lee Ralph was not invited to the big-screen party starring Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx, and Danny Glover. “Dreamgirls” is scheduled to open on Christmas Day, five days short of the 25th anniversary date of its Broadway opening. Buju’s ‘Too Bad’ campaign After an afternoon signing “Too Bad” CD’s in Queens, Buju Banton stopped at radio stations and clubs last Sunday talking up the relevance of his latest release. Although the CD was released three months ago, and his tour started and ended in the Big Apple, the deejay seems to be frequenting New York for more promotion. Hailing the release as his best, at least over a decade, the Gargamel seemed in good spirits selling dancehall and his specific brand. He steered clear of controversy opting to focus on sales and reggae music. Last Friday he was expected to share a stage with Gyptian. Outer-borough, reggae lovers who missed his B.B. Kings Times Square date not too long ago must have jammed Queens’ Club Amazura. For sure, at that venue, Banton could really relax to play into dawn with no union restrictions or pesky demonstrators who are more prone to rally with anti-Buju Banton concert agendas in Manhattan. All in all, the deep-throated, deejay has been enjoying good reception with his “Too Bad” campaign. Glory to Perry Henzell It was my privilege to be seated just across the aisle from filmmaker Perry Henzell at the Carib Theatre premiere of the Lennie Little-White directed movie “Glory To Glorianna” last spring. Seated next to his wife Sally, Henzell viewed the biopic with keen interest. I spoke to him immediately after the credits rolled. “I wish her (Gloria Minto) well,” Henzell said of the entrepreneurial Montegonian who invested and opened Hotel Gloriana in 1994 to now be reputed for her “rags to riches” movie. Adding that he was a friend and admirer of the relentless and persevering Jamaican woman, Henzell was recognised and distracted from elaborating when a political figure interrupted our conversation with a “Hi Perry” greeting. The personable director accommodated all the local celebs who acknowledged him afterward ending our conversation that evening. It was obvious his wife of four decades directed her husband’s every encounter. She seemed to limit advances toward him by steering him toward the exit. Henzell politely said he was happy to see a film shot in Jamaica by Jamaicans and hoped the industry would thrive. It was his lifelong hope that Jamaica could lead the region as a film mecca. His son Jason echoed similar sentiment when I spoke with him two months ago in New York at the gala benefit hosted by American Friends of Jamaica. Jason promoted his sister’s effort to restore another film, “No Place Like Home”, lauded critics’ response to screenings at the Toronto Film Festival last summer and told me promotion was his sister’s legacy. Jason said a special screening in Jamaica would premiere the digitized flick. That special screening was scheduled a day after Henzell’s passing. The perceptive filmmaker is internationally acclaimed for his visionary lensing of Jimmy Cliff’s first acting performance in the independent film, “The Harder They Come”. More than a cult classic, the film celebrates Jamaica, its people and Henzell’s pride as the predecessor of the island’s film industry. For that, the world will be eternally grateful to Perry Henzell and his visionary lens. But Henzell seemed the island’s biggest cheerleader for the film industry. He was one of the first to endorse the Jamerican Film Festival and more than an onlooker at every other launch of the medium. See you in the Whirl.

Reggae singer Nadine Sutherland was at her best two weeks ago when she performed at the St Lucia Jazz Festival for the first time in her career.
Taking the stage on day one of the festival, Sutherland and her Strong House backing band gave an electrifying one-hour set of classics. Digging deep into her catalogue she performed a host of singles including Action, Baby Face, Wicked Fi Please and Big Tings, which found a responsive chord with the capacity audience.
Nadine who released her compilation album Call My Name last April was duly rewarded for her contributions to reggae music at the Canadian Reggae Music Awards International Awards a few months ago were she got the Order of Merit. The 10-day jazz festival which celebrated its 17th anniversary this year featured a stellar line up of international artistes including the voices of Jonathan Butler, Dianne Reeves, Dionne Warwick, Ledisi and Angie Stone along with the musical talents of instrumental performers such as the Juilliard Quartet, featuring Ron Blake, Eddie Henderson, Carl Allen and Ben Wolfe while the Haitian hip hop superstar Wyclef Jean cemented the diversity.
Since its establishment in 1992, St Lucia Jazz has grown in magnitude and stature to become one of the preeminent jazz festivals in the world. World-class artistes including r&b legends Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, Carlos Santana, Patti Labelle and jazz greats Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Herbie Hanthingy, Stanley Jordan, Roy Hargrove and George Benson have all played before an audience of St Lucian locals and tourists.
